Termites are one of the most destructive pests in Australia, and here in South East Queensland they’re a constant threat to homes and businesses. Often mistaken for “white ants,” termites are actually more closely related to cockroaches. While there are over 300 species of termites across Australia, only a handful are a direct concern for homeowners — but those few can cause extensive and costly damage.
In fact, termites cause more structural damage to Australian homes each year than storms, floods, and fires combined. What makes them so dangerous is that their activity is usually hidden. By the time visible signs appear, significant damage is often already done.
Termites are highly organised insects that live in colonies ranging from thousands to several million individuals. Each colony is made up of:
Queens & Kings – responsible for reproduction (a queen may lay up to 1,000 eggs per day).
Workers – gather food, build tunnels, and feed the colony.
Soldiers – defend against predators.
Alates – winged reproductives that leave the colony to start new nests.
Their diet is based on cellulose, found in timber and other wood products. Termites can travel more than 100 metres underground in search of food, building mud tubes to stay protected and hidden. This is why infestations often go unnoticed until significant structural damage occurs.
Around 1 in 5 Australian homes will experience a termite attack during their lifetime.
“Slab-on-ground” homes are particularly vulnerable, as termites often enter unseen from below.
Home insurance does not cover termite damage.
Because of our warm and humid climate, South East Queensland provides the perfect environment for termite activity year-round. Without regular inspections and preventative measures, every home is at risk.
While termites are experts at staying hidden, there are a few common warning signs to look out for:
If you spot any of these, do not disturb them. Termites will often retreat and re-enter elsewhere, making treatment more difficult. Call a licensed pest professional immediately. Our proactive approach ensures that your home remains a safe and comfortable haven for you and your family.
